Summary of Credit Criteria for 1000-level Math courses:Ĭredit for LSU math courses can be earned by taking the course at LSU or by transfer credit. No student who has already received credit for a mathematics course numbered 1530 or above may be registered in a mathematics course numbered below 1530, unless given special permission by the Department of Mathematics. No student may receive more than nine semester hours of credit in mathematics courses numbered below 1530, with the exception of students who are pursuing the elementary education degree and following the 12-hour sequence specified in that curriculum. The prerequisites for Math 12 are Math 1021 and Math 1201, respectively. There are no prerequisites for Math 1029 or 1100. Credit is not given for both 10 or for both 10. Regardless of scores on the above exams, a student may take Math 1022 or 1431 if he has credit in Math 1021. Prior coursework and high ACT/SAT scores are not sufficient for taking Math 1530, 1550, or 1551 Only those students with a fresh ALEKS PPL score obtained through LSU can be placed into Math 1530 or 1550 (minimum score 76%) or 1551 (minimum score 81%).

Credit is not given for both 10, or for both 10.įor more information on ALEKS PPL, click here. (Those tables will explain the phrase "placement by department" found in the catalog descriptions of Math 1021, 1022, 1023.) Regardless of scores on the above exams, a student may take Math 1022 or 1431 if he has credit in Math 1021. Placement in Math 1021, 1022, 1023, or 1431 can be based on either the quantitative SAT (QSAT), the math ACT (MACT) score, the score on the LSU math placement exams, or (beginning March 4, 2021) the ALEKS PPL score see tables below. In case the student’s major requires only “General Education-Analytical Reasoning” (or “Integrative Learning Core-Analytical Reasoning”) courses, without mentioning any particular math course, then Math 1029 and/or Math 1100 (which have no prerequisites and are intended for students in the liberal arts or the social sciences) may be the best placement. The first step in placing a student into a 1000-level Math course is to examine the student’s intended major field of study and check in the catalog which math courses that major field requires.
